What Marcus Rashford told Mason Greenwood after his first Man Utd goal

Mason Greenwood grabbed his first Manchester United goal on Wednesday – and instantly received some words of encouragement from Marcus Rashford.

The young attacker is being tipped to follow in the footsteps of Rashford, who made his first team breakthrough at Old Trafford a few weeks ago.

Greenwood, 17, struck his first senior goal after just seven minutes against Leeds as Rashford went on to find the net himself 20 minutes later in a 4-0 win.

The England international revealed after the game he told his teenage team-mate there will be plenty more to come and that he doesn’t have to change anything to be a success in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team.

“I said to him ‘once you get the first goal, the rest will come naturally’.

“That goal is nothing but instinct. You can tell he’s a natural finisher, that’s what he’s best at.

“So for him, he doesn’t have to change anything, he’ll come into the team, do his stuff and he’ll score goals and that’s what he does.”

Greenwood made his United debut in their dramatic Champions League triumph at Paris Saint-Germain as a late substitute last season before going on to make three Premier League appearances.

He is now in with a chance of starting their season opener against Chelsea after impressing manager Solskjaer so far in pre-season.

“Mason’s got a chance to start that game against Chelsea, definitely,” said Solskjaer after their Leeds win.

“He’s capable, more than capable.

“He’ll always be there, in and around the box, creating chances. I won’t say that that’s not a possibility.

“It’s a good possibility if he keeps going as he does. It’s difficult to keep players out if they keep playing well.

“That first goal is maybe going to be a weight off his shoulders. His movement, his cleverness, he’s going to be a very good player. He can play anywhere along the front line.

“You see a talented boy there and he’s got every opportunity to make it as a United player.

“Of course, it’s also going to be about luck, staying clear of injuries, being professional, but I’m sure he’s going to grab his chance because everything is there for him.”
